It’s been more than a decade since Phil Mickelson won the British Open, and the American golfer was at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland this week for a practice round in preparation for the 2024 British Open.
But when Mickelson showed up to the annual major tournament in a surprising outfit: jogging shorts, he was quick to clarify that the fashion choice that day was actually not his own at all.
The 54-year-old showed sportsmanship even after losing the bet. Earlier this week, YouTube golfer Grant Holbert shared a video of him and Mickelson playing against each other on his channel.

Under the terms of the agreement, if Holbert won the match, Mickelson had to wear joggers at the British Open.

On the flip side, if the six-time major champion were to win, Holbert would likely be forced to buy a year’s supply of coffee for his fans.
Holbert entered the match five strokes behind, which seems to be a common pattern in YouTube-style matches with professional golfers. video The photo was apparently taken on a golf course in Rancho Santa Fe, California.

Still, Mickelson seemed to take the loss in stride, even making fun of the situation on social media.
“As an unfashionable 54 year old, I never thought I could pull off joggers. Looks like I was wrong,” Mickelson wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In the YouTube video, Mickelson suggested that style would be difficult to achieve.
“Wow,” he said, “I don’t know if I can do that. Were joggers for 54-year-olds?”
