Philadelphia breaks world record for largest drag queen story hour event

Organizers in the City of Brotherly Love recently broke world records by hosting the largest ever Drag Queen Story Hour event, where children were read LGBTQI+ stories and exposed to gender ideas.

The event took place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on June 1. It was sponsored by Visit Philadelphia, the city’s official tourism board, and organized by Philadelphia Gay News.

A total of 268 people, both adults and children, participated in the event. A judge from the Guinness World Records Board was also present at the event to certify the world record. This is the first time that this award has been presented.

Children’s books read to young audiences included “Twas the Night Before Pride” by Joanna McClintic and “The Family Book” by Todd Parr, both of which touch on LGBTQI+ culture.

Drag queens also performed at the event reading “Kevin the Unicorn: It’s Not All Rainbows” by Jessica Von Innerbunner, “Hello, Philadelphia!” by Martha Day Zuschock, and “Elmer” by David McKee.

In a post on Saturday’s X, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau touted the record-breaking event, which “brought together some of Philadelphia’s best-known drag performers.”

“The Birthplace of America, Philadelphia, today earned a new Guinness World Records title for ‘Most Attended Drag Queen Storytime Reading,'” the post read.

According to the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau’s 2023 annual report, the organization revealed it received $16.6 million in funding, with 84% of the funding coming from Philadelphia hotel taxes and 9% from “grants and donations.” The Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau did not immediately respond to a request from Fox News Digital asking whether the Drag Queen Storytime event was funded by taxpayers.

In a statement obtained by The Associated Press, Philadelphia Gay News Publisher Mark Segal called the event “history making.”

“[C]”Having a historic moment like today take place on a site synonymous with our nation’s fight for fundamental rights and freedoms serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, talent and culture that defines a great American city,” he said.
