The Philadelphia Eagles’ slide continued Sunday night. They opened with a 10-0 lead but then surrendered 27 straight points in a 27-10 defeat to the Washington Commanders.
Philadelphia got off to a promising start: Jake Elliott made a 40-yard field goal, then Saquon Barkley ran in a three-yard touchdown after Washington turned the ball over. That was it for the Eagles’ scoring. The Commanders responded with Jayden Daniels and kicker Drew Stevens leading the way.
Stevens connected from 56 yards late in the first quarter. In the second, Daniels threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs, and Stevens added a 39-yard field goal before the break to give Washington a 13-10 lead.
Philadelphia appeared to struggle without Jalen Hurts, who was reportedly expected to miss the rest of the season after blood clots were found in his lungs. Tanner McKee had a difficult night, taking sacks, holding onto the ball and throwing two interceptions. He also rarely tested Washington downfield.
With Hurts out, Washington crowded the line of scrimmage and limited Barkley to 30 yards on 13 carries.
The game swung further in Washington’s favor in the third quarter, when Dorance Armstrong strip-sacked McKee and Charles Omenihu recovered the ball. Daniels then connected with Treylon Burks for a 53-yard gain, setting up Stevens for a 25-yard field goal.
The Eagles had a chance to get back into it in the fourth quarter, but a penalty erased Elliott’s apparent 36-yard field goal. Left tackle Jordan Mailata was called for an illegal formation, pushing Philadelphia back five yards, and Elliott missed the longer attempt wide right.
Stevens added a 42-yard field goal with 3:43 remaining. On Philadelphia’s next possession, Commanders cornerback Rasul Douglas intercepted McKee.
Washington then put the game away. Rachaad White ran for 33 yards and scored from the one-yard line with 1:52 left. Austin Ekeler ran in the two-point conversion, making it 27-10.
Daniels finished with 217 passing yards, a touchdown and no turnovers. The Eagles have now lost six consecutive games and sit at 2-6. Washington improved to 2-4-1, moving out of last place in the NFC East.
