Philadelphia Sports Teams Face Tough Night
Philadelphia residents should probably steer clear of the lottery for a bit. Last Thursday was quite the rough evening for local sports, as all three major teams—well, they were in action and lost.
The Phillies were in a pivotal National League Division Series matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. A win there would have been crucial, giving them a 2-0 lead in the series. Instead, they’re headed into a decisive Game 5 this Saturday, and the stakes are pretty high for the City of Brotherly Love.
In what turned out to be an intense game that went into overtime, a misstep on a pitch by Orion Kirkeling helped the Dodgers seal their spot in the National League Championship Series, while the Phillies’ season came to an unfortunate end.
During the same night, the Eagles were up against the New York Giants. They were trailing at halftime, and although things looked hopeful at first, the Giants ended up winning 34-17. Rookie running back Cam Skatebo had three touchdowns, marking a significant win for the Giants, as they hadn’t won a Thursday night game since 2015. It was also the fourth time they triumphed over the Eagles in their last 22 matchups—including playoffs.
Adding to the gloomy night, the Flyers lost their opener to the Florida Panthers, who are the two-time Stanley Cup champions, marking a tough start to the NHL season.
This marked the eighth occasion when the Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers played on the same day, but it was particularly disheartening since all three teams lost. The last time this happened was way back on October 16, 1983, and interestingly, it was the first time since 1993 that all three played simultaneously.
Throwback to 1991, when the Phillies lost to the New York Mets, but the Flyers managed to tie up against the Pittsburgh Penguins, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers even securing a win against the Eagles. Curiously, the only day when all Philly teams emerged victorious was October 19, 1980.
And just to add a little irony, there’s never been an instance where all four teams—including the 76ers—played on the same day.
On the bright side, Philadelphia fans can still hold on to that Super Bowl championship from last season. However, with the Eagles facing two consecutive losses now, they definitely aren’t looking as sharp as they did last year.
