Phillies acquire Jesus Luzardo in trade with Marlins

The Phillies are strengthening an already strong rotation.

Philadelphia has acquired left-handed starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo from the Marlins, the Post's Jon Heyman confirmed Sunday morning.

Starlin Cava, the 19-year-old shortstop who is ranked by MLB.com as the Phillies' No. 4 prospect, and 21-year-old outfielder Emarion Boyd, who is ranked No. 23 by the Phillies, will be traded to Miami.

Luzardo, 27, was limited to 12 starts last year due to a hip injury, but he posted a 5.00 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings.

He had a career year in 2023, starting 32 games and posting a 3.58 ERA and 208 strikeouts in 178 2/3 innings.

This marked the most innings Luzardo has pitched in a season. The previous year, he pitched 100 1/3 innings, and in 2018 he pitched 109 1/3 innings.

Luzardo joins a rotation that already includes Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Christopher Sanchez and Ranger Suarez, with top prospect Andrew Painter on either wing.
