Harper Ejected After Controversial Check Swing Call
In a tense moment during the Philadelphia Phillies’ 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night, Bryce Harper was ejected after a heated disagreement over a check swing call. The incident unfolded in the bottom of the seventh inning, with the game tied at 3-3 and two runners on base.
With a full count, Harper attempted to hold up his swing as the Tigers’ relief pitcher threw a ball in the dirt. The third base umpire, Vickarapazza, signaled Harper out, which led to his visible frustration. He immediately removed his helmet and began gesturing in disbelief.
As Harper approached Umpire Karapazza, it certainly seemed like he expressed his discontent quite candidly. “I left the batter’s box walking towards him, so I think that was guaranteed,” Harper remarked after his ejection.
Later, he added that in such a decisive moment, “you can’t throw it away, especially with nine innings coming and my bats approaching.” Unfortunately for the Phillies, shortly after Harper’s exit, Tigers right fielder Wensel Perez hit a solo home run, pushing the Tigers ahead 4-3.
However, the Phillies quickly responded in the eighth inning. Left fielder Otto Kemp doubled, and Nick Castellanos brought him home, leveling the score at 4-4. Continuing the momentum, second baseman Bryson Stott then singled to bring in Kemp, giving the Phillies a 5-4 advantage they maintained until the end.
With this victory, the Phillies improved to 62-47, edging past the New York Mets for the top position in the National League East. The two teams will face off again in the second game of their series on Saturday at 4:05 PM.
