Nick Castellanos’ Game Bench Decision Raises Eyebrows
During the Philadelphia Phillies’ game against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday, outfielder Nick Castellanos found himself in an unexpected situation right from the start. The day before, he had a heated discussion with manager Rob Thomson after the Phillies triumphed over the Marlins 5-2. Just before the second game of their ongoing series, Thomson informed reporters that Castellanos would not be included in that day’s starting lineup.
Thomson referred to “inappropriate comments” made by Castellanos after he was taken out of Monday’s game. I mean, it seems like there might’ve been more to that sparked by emotions. Castellanos, known for his passionate approach, expressed frustration over his early exit from the previous contest.
“One of the many things about Nick, which I love, is that he’s very emotional,” Thomson noted. “He loves to play and wants to be in every game. However, I felt his comment last night crossed a line.”
In response to Castellanos’ absence, Max Kepler shifted from center field to take over Castellanos’ position, while Johann Rojas stepped into the center field role. It’s always a challenge when team dynamics shift like this, isn’t it?
Castellanos made no secret of his dissatisfaction regarding his benching. He said, “I wasn’t satisfied with it. I spoke my heart. He said I crossed the line, so my punishment is that I’m not playing.” It’s a pretty candid admission, honestly. He acknowledged that, ultimately, it’s up to the manager to decide who plays during a game. “That’s his decision. He’s the manager,” he stated.
Castellanos, who signed a significant five-year contract with the Phillies in 2022, has been having a solid season so far, hitting .278 with seven home runs in 72 games. Remarkably, he hadn’t missed a game since September 30, 2023, making this benching even more noteworthy.
