Phillies manager Rob Thomson goes ballistic on umpire in wild ejection

Phillies manager Rob Thomson really chastised umpire Mike Estabrook on Sunday.

The Phillies captain was ejected after Garrett Stubbs was hit in the leg in the top of the sixth inning against the Orioles at Camden Park and sent to first base for what was initially ruled a hit by pitch, but manager Estabrook overturned the call.

After discussing the situation with his fellow umpires, Estabrook eventually ordered Stubbs back to the plate, and an angry Thompson came out to find out what had happened.

The conversation quickly soured, with Thompson, already upset about the way the strike zone was called Sunday, growing angrier with every breath he took, until the Phillies manager got in Estabrook’s face, and Estabrook ejected Thompson.

This infuriated Thompson even more, leading to Estabrook yelling back in Thompson’s face, making the situation even worse.

The animated conversation continued for a while, until Laz Diaz finally stepped in and escorted Thompson to the Phillies dugout.

The play was eventually reviewed on replay and the final decision was that Stubbs should have stayed at bat.

Orioles pitcher Corbin Burns was able to get Stubbs to hit a fly to center field on the next pitch.

Baltimore ended their three-game series with an 8-3 victory, but the Phillies lost for the fourth time in their last six games.
