Phillies Manager Rob Thomson Retains Position
Following an emotional conclusion to a commendable season in Philadelphia, Phillies manager Rob Thomson will remain at the helm. This was confirmed by Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman.
The Phillies secured the National League East title with an impressive record of 96 wins and 66 losses. However, their postseason took a disappointing turn as they lost to the Dodgers in a four-game series.
The series came to a jarring end in the 11th inning. Pitcher Orion Kirkeling delivered a crucial hit with the bases loaded, tying the game at 1-1. Despite an error, the Dodgers clinched a walk-off victory, finishing 2-1.
In Game 2, with the team trailing by one run and no outs at second base, Thomson made the controversial call to have Bryson Stott bunt, which led to widespread criticism regarding his management, ultimately contributing to the Phillies’ early elimination.
Castellanos was tagged out attempting to advance to third on that bunt, and the Phillies fell 4-3, digging themselves into a 2-0 series deficit.
Post-game, Thomson explained, “It was just on the left side. I was trying to tie the game. I liked where our bullpen was at home compared to their bullpen. We play for a tie at home.”
As the second half of the ninth inning unfolded, frustration mounted, particularly after Thomson opted to pinch-run for Harrison Bader but didn’t pinch-hit for Castellanos. This decision only intensified the criticism aimed at him.
The postgame analysis on NBC escalated into heated debate over his tactical choices. “What Rob Thomson did was not pinch running,” Michael Barkan remarked, highlighting the missed opportunity to utilize a pinch runner instead of executing a bunt.
In Philadelphia, impatience is brewing as the Phillies have a disappointing playoff record of 2-8 in their last 10 games, having lost three consecutive series leading into the 2023 postseason.
This year, despite playing Games 6 and 7 at home, the team squandered a 3-2 lead against the Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series. Previously, they were eliminated at the hands of the Mets while holding the top seed in the previous season and faced another early exit this year.
Thomson’s contract has one more year remaining. The team aims to maintain stability as several players head towards free agency.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski will have a lighter workload this offseason, with key players like Kyle Schwarber, Ranger Suarez, and JT Realmuto potentially departing.
