Phillies Analysts Voice Concerns Over Team’s Performance
Analysts from NBC Sports Philadelphia are expressing unease about the Phillies potentially becoming underdogs in the NL East race. After a 6-5 loss to the Mets on Tuesday, the lead dwindled to just five games, raising concerns among the crew.
They discussed how Wednesday’s game is crucial, with the Phillies aiming to avoid a three-game sweep that might have significant repercussions for the rest of the season.
“It’s reasonable to say this is a big game,” analyst Ricky Botarico noted, emphasizing the importance of the matchup.
The team had an opportunity to extend their lead over the Mets to seven games, but playing at Citifield has proven challenging.
In another twist, the Phillies faltered again, losing an early advantage, with newcomer Joan Duran suffering his ninth single in a walk-off defeat.
There’s an echo of a famous line from “Jurassic Park”: looking back, things may be closer than they appear. A tiebreaker could swing in favor of the Mets if they manage another win in their last five games against the Phillies.
Host Michael Barkann expressed concern about the Phillies’ track record, noting their nine consecutive losses to the Mets, which casts a shadow over their lead. “If they lose another game, that tiebreaker could cause them to lose the division,” he stated.
Botarico seemed hesitant, asking, “Would you go there now?” to which Barkann countered vigorously, pointing out that there are still 30 games left in the season, and the team should be stepping up instead of getting frustrated.
Later, Botarico conceded that Barkann might have a point.
Barkann responded with a bit of humor, saying, “Trust me, I’m right.” Yet, Botarico was not entirely convinced the Phillies were choking.
“I think this might just be a momentary slip,” he shared, suggesting that the Mets might not be the primary concern when they face other teams.
Ben Davis highlighted the importance of the game on Wednesday, with the Phillies’ Sun Walker facing Mets rookie Nolan McLean. He warned that the Mets’ gaining momentum could be detrimental. “We need to consider this for the next 30 games,” he noted, underscoring the implications for potential tiebreakers.
Davis expressed a reluctance about the pressure, saying it’s not ideal to feel like one has to win, emphasizing the psychological burden that can weigh on players.
The Phillies are reminded of their past, having famously overcome a seven-game deficit in 2007, and it seems the Mets are eager to replicate that sense of pressure.
