Phillies' season concludes due to a costly mistake by a reliever in extra innings

Phillies Reliever’s Error Hands Dodgers Victory

Orion Kerkeling stood on the field, hands on his knees, looking down with a gloomy expression. He had just made a devastating mistake that cost the Phillies dearly. His errant throw, missing catcher JT Realmuto, allowed the Dodgers to snatch a 2-1 win and advance to the National League Championship Series.

During Game 4 on Thursday, in the bottom of the 11th inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, outfielder Andy Pages hit a grounder back to Kerkeling, which tied the game. The right-handed pitcher hurriedly grabbed the ball and, under pressure, decided to throw to home plate instead of to first base.

This choice proved fatal. The throw sailed over Realmuto’s glove as he made a signal to first base, allowing the winning run to score. With Dodger Stadium erupting in celebration, the Dodgers rushed the field, engulfing Pages in their jubilation.

After the game, Kerkeling, visibly disheartened, sat in the dugout while Phillies manager Rob Thomson attempted to offer some comfort. “Keep your head up,” Thomson advised. “He just got caught up in the moment a little. He really pitched well for us during the season. It’s tough because we all feel the weight of this together.”

As Kerkeling watched the Dodgers revel in their victory, his teammates rallied around him, trying to lift his spirits amidst the disappointment.

The Dodgers will now face the winner of the Brewers-Cubs matchup in the NLCS, marking their second consecutive year advancing this far, while the Phillies find themselves ousted in the NLDS for the second year in a row.
