Rep. Dwight Evans Announces Retirement
Representative Dwight Evans, a Democrat from Pennsylvania representing portions of West and North Philadelphia, revealed on Monday that he will not seek re-election. He joins another senior Democrat, Trickle, who also announced his retirement this year as the party grapples with its aging membership.
“I’m healthy and able to continue my service, but after some reflection and discussions this weekend, I’ve decided it’s time to announce that I will not run again in 2026,” Evans stated in a press release.
At 71 years old, Evans faced health challenges last year when he suffered a stroke that kept him from voting in the Capitol for seven months. Prior to his announcement last week, some local Democrats had been discussing key issues with him, suggesting he might stay in the race.
Evans has represented his district since 2016, following a long career as a state legislator spanning 35 years. He expressed intent to utilize his experience in the future.
With Evans stepping down, discussions are surfacing among state legislators regarding potential candidates for his seat, including representatives Morgan Cephus and Chris Love, as well as Pennsylvania Democratic Chairman Sharif Street.
Evans marks the third Democrat over 70 to announce retirement this year. Rep. Jan Schakowsky stated he won’t run for a 15th term, and Rep. Jerry Connolly chose not to run again before passing away from cancer shortly after his announcement. He was 75 at the time.
The topic of aging incumbents has become a contentious issue within the party lately. Former Democratic National Committee vice-chairman David Hogg recently launched a $20 million fund aimed at promoting younger candidates to challenge senior lawmakers, which occurred after he lost his leadership position amid various controversies.
Interestingly, over half of the 30 House Democrats over the age of 70 indicated in May that they plan to run again.
Yet, older representatives aren’t unique to the Democrats; former Congressman Kay Granger, a Republican from Texas, was also unable to vote last year due to health issues related to dementia, as described by her son.
