Phoenix woman gets 37 years for neglected baby’s death

A Phoenix woman who caused the death of her baby daughter from malnutrition and medical neglect in 2013 has been sentenced to 37 years in prison, authorities announced Tuesday.

The Maricopa County Prosecutor's Office announced that Dennis Janelle Snowingrum, 48, was found guilty last November of one count each of second-degree murder and child abuse.

According to evidence presented at trial, the 16-month-old baby girl weighed less than 9 pounds at the time of her death in July 2013.

Prosecutors said the infant was fed only oatmeal, watered-down apple juice and some fruit, and no protein or calcium sources after breastfeeding was discontinued.

The child also suffered from rickets, a disease caused by vitamin D deficiency. An ambulance was called to her parents' home to report the child was not breathing, and she died at the hospital.

The girl's parents told police they had never taken the girl to a doctor because of her religious beliefs.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said Snow Ingram “allowed her daughter to be physically consumed by neglect and abuse.” “This was a child with no hope of survival in her parents' hands.”

Snow Ingram was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 17 years in prison, to be served consecutively.
