Piece of AT&T Stadium roof falls in Cowboys-Texans pregame scare

Cowboys players may have bigger things to worry about than sun glare.

A piece of metal fell from the roof of AT&T Stadium after it opened ahead of the Monday Night Football game between the Cowboys and Texans.

A large piece of metal fell near multiple production staff, According to Fox 4's Jeff Kolb.

Another piece of metal also appeared to be loose, according to another post by a Dallas sportswriter.

There were no injuries from the falling debris, and the stadium roof was closed again after metal fell onto the field below.

The Cowboys haven't played with the roof open at AT&T Stadium since October 2022, when they played against the Bears.

“During the opening of the roof, we can confirm that a piece of metal came loose and fell on the scene (there were also some smaller pieces). There were no injuries. Further investigation is underway and if possible… A decision will be made whether the roof can be safely reopened,” the team said in a statement.

ESPN's Lisa Salters later reported on “Monday Night Countdown” that a second piece of metal, the same size as the first, fell onto a catwalk above the field.

Salters said NFL security insisted that the second piece of metal be secured or removed.

AT&T Stadium officials chose to secure the metal, and ESPN aired footage of stadium employees going up and bolting pieces of metal to the catwalk.

The network also aired the first footage of debris hitting a field.

Footage showed a metal sheet rolling off the roof and falling near the suite area, causing people in the area to quickly evacuate.

The Cowboys' home stadium has recently been the subject of other headlines due to facility-related issues.

Receiver CeeDee Lamb was supposed to make a 3-yard touchdown catch against the Eagles in Week 10, but missed because he was blinded by sunlight.

After Lamb agreed that blackout curtains should be installed to prevent that, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was somewhat dismissive on the topic to reporters after the game.

“So someone asked me about the sun. What about the sun? Where's the moon? All right. But we're all playing in the sun here,” Jones said in part.

Ironically, when AT&T Stadium hosted the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight last weekend, the stadium had curtains installed to block out the sun.
