Surprise Reunion for Utah Pilot and Grandmother

A pilot in Utah orchestrated a touching surprise for his grandmother, who had no idea he was flying the plane she was on.

Justin Schultz, the airline captain, was emotional about a well-planned reunion ahead of her first trip to see him in Utah.

Thanks to a network of pilots, Schultz managed to switch one of his scheduled flights with American Airlines, ensuring he was on the same plane as his grandmother, Carolyn.

“I had to reach out to the crew operating the flight and explained my situation,” Schultz recounted, seeking their help in pulling off the surprise.

Little did Carolyn know that her grandson was waiting for her in the cockpit.

As the flight began, Schultz welcomed passengers over the intercom, sharing anecdotes about his grandmother and his late grandfather.

It wasn’t until Carolyn realized she was getting closer to her grandson that she asked if she could wake up her fellow passengers. Tears in her eyes, she rushed down the aisle to embrace Schultz.

“I’ll never forget the moment she ran toward me. That’s when I felt the nerves kick in,” he said, reflecting on the overwhelming joy of the reunion.

While Carolyn was excited to see Schultz, her heart swelled with pride knowing he was pursuing his passion for flying.

“I know how hard he works and how well he’s doing. That meant everything to me,” she expressed.

Schultz credits much of his success to the unwavering support of his grandparents, who stood by him throughout his journey, including his training as a pilot.

Though his grandfather passed away in April, he had the chance to fly with Schultz a few years back when he was just starting out.

“He would have been right there with me on that flight. He always said, ‘I’m sitting by Justin’s side.’ He would have been incredibly proud,” Schultz said.
