Recovery After Fall at PNC Park
Last week, Pittsburgh Pirates fans who fell over 20 feet into the right field wall at PNC Park began their recovery journey. Kaban Markwood, a 20-year-old ex-college football player, expressed that he has a “long road” ahead but made his first step toward recovery on Monday.
During a game against the Chicago Cubs, Markwood slid down the first row’s railings, flipping several times before landing on the warning track. The fall occurred just as Andrew McCutchen hit a double, and players on the field appeared visibly shaken as medical personnel rushed to his aid.
Jennifer Phillips organized a GoFundMe page for Markwood, describing the recovery process as “slow.” She noted, “Seeing him moving was a big victory.” However, she mentioned that Markwood is facing challenges with his neck, collarbone, and back, and there are many obstacles ahead.
Despite the difficulties, she emphasized that he shows remarkable strength. “We’re maintaining hope for a smooth recovery,” she added. “But he needs adequate rest and must heed the instructions from his doctors and nurses.”
Markwood was transported to Allegheny General Hospital following the accident, where he was in serious condition. Those around him during the game were excited by the Pirates’ performance, many celebrating with drinks, moments before the incident.
Interestingly, Markwood had played for Walsh University and Wheeling University, participating in four games for Wheeling in 2023. As the game continued after the incident, the Pirates ultimately secured a 4-3 victory over the Cubs.
McCutchen shared his thoughts on social media, expressing his condolences and urging fans to keep Markwood and his family in their prayers.
