Pistons lose star Jaden Ivey for season after nasty leg injury

Detroit's breakout star likely had his season cut short after suffering a gruesome fracture of his left fibula on Wednesday.

Pistons guard Jaden Ivey is expected to miss “at least the majority of the rest of the season.” According to ESPN.

The third-year guard was enjoying the best season of his career when he charged after a long rebound with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter of the Pistons' 105-96 win over the Magic.

Magic guard Cole Anthony tried to take the ball as Ivey ran in, but Anthony landed on his left foot and fell to the ground in severe pain.

The game had to be called off and Ivey left the court on a stretcher.

When it became clear that this was a serious injury, Ivey's leg was stabilized in an air cast while players surrounded and comforted the growing star guard.

Ivey, 22, is averaging 17.6 points per game this season, a slight increase from last year's 15.6 points per game.

The most impressive improvement by Ivey has been in his 3-point percentage, which has increased from 33.6 percent to 40.9 percent this year.

“It's tough for the whole group. It's tough for us to see him hurt like that,” Pistons coach JB Bickerstaff said after the game. “He's built for it, you'd be trembling knowing him. He's going to give it his all and when he comes back he's going to be better than ever. It's tough for sure.”

The Pistons continue to improve, with a record of 15 wins and 18 losses, good enough for the No. 9 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Sportsbooks are projecting the Pistons' win total this year at 22.5 games, a number they can easily beat.

Security guard Cade Cunningham also made a leap forward as Batman, replacing Ivy's Robin.

Cunningham is averaging 23.8 points, 9.7 assists and 6.8 rebounds.
