Pit Bull Attack in Texas Leaves Toddler Injured
A pit bull attacked a 2-year-old boy and his mother in Texas, leaving the child fighting for his life. Kelsey Marie Welch recounted the frightening incident to WFAA, saying, “He was just covered in blood.”
Welch, 30, who lives in Pecan Acres Mobile Park in Midlothian, described how the dog became aggressive around 9:30 p.m. on March 27. The pit bull broke into her son Julius’s room, biting him on the head right after getting out of its cage.
She recalled, “[The dog] jumped on the bed and started attacking my son… The dog immediately went for the back of his head and I was trying to open the dog’s mouth.” When Welch stood between her son and the dog, it then turned its attention to her, nibbling at her leg.
In a panic, she managed to escape with Julius and locked the dog in the room until help arrived. Animal control later euthanized the pit bull.
“Honestly, I thought my child was going to die,” Welch admitted, shaken by the experience.
Julius was airlifted to Cook Children’s Medical Center, where he underwent nine hours of surgery and received a blood transfusion. Reports indicate that doctors even had to place the toddler on a ventilator following the brutal attack. A GoFundMe page was created by a family friend to aid in his recovery.
Welch expressed her trauma, stating, “Even now, when I close my eyes, I see my son, whose head I can’t even see, and my dog shivering.” Initially, she told police that the dog was a stranger that had entered their home, but it was later revealed that the pit bull actually belonged to her boyfriend.
Family members noted that the kind-hearted boy will need multiple surgeries and ongoing treatment on his path to recovery.
The pit bull, adopted as a puppy at six weeks, had been around children and was not known to display violent behavior.
Recently, Julius was able to leave the intensive care unit, and doctors removed his breathing tube. As of now, neither Welch nor her boyfriend faces any charges related to the incident.
