The plane crashed near South Lake Tahoe, California, on Thursday afternoon, killing both people on board after it was reported to have missed its scheduled arrival time.
Alpine County sheriff’s deputies were notified about the flight delay around 1 a.m. local time.
The plane’s GPS transponder located it in the Willow Creek area near Luther Pass, the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
Police responded to the scene and found the single-engine aircraft crashed adjacent to Willow Creek Road, with two occupants on board who were pronounced dead.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said searchers found the wreckage of the single-engine Luscombe 8A about 5:30 a.m.
The plane took off from Lodi Airport on Wednesday afternoon, according to the FAA.
Police said the identities of those who died will not be released until family members have been notified.

Alpine County sheriff’s deputies are overseeing the coroner’s investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
