Plane crashes near Ponoma Dragstrip during racing event, injuring at least three

A single-engine plane crashed at a California racing facility on Sunday, injuring at least three people and suspending drag racing competition.

The accident was reported just after 11 a.m. Sunday at the Pomona Dragstrip. At the time, the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing finals were being held at this venue.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department reported an incident involving the X, noting that at least three people suffered “moderate to severe injuries.”

“At 11:10 a.m., #LACoFD units responded to a single-engine aircraft crash,” the social media post said. “Three passengers were transported to local hospitals with moderate to serious injuries.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed to Fox News Digital that the plane crashed, noting that the plane struck two vehicles during its descent.

“A single-engine Piper PA-32 crashed near La Verne, California, at approximately 11:40 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 17,” the FAA said in a statement. “The aircraft collided with two vehicles.”

“The number of passengers is unknown,” the statement added. “The FAA will investigate.”

Photos from the scene show several first responders working near the plane. In the accident, the plane struck a white truck, and the damaged vehicle was just a few feet from the wrecked plane.

The final race was temporarily suspended due to the incident, but the NHRA later announced on Facebook that the race would resume at 1pm local time.
