Planned Parenthood to Close Louisiana Clinics

Planned Parenthood is set to close its last two facilities in Louisiana next month. Supporters of the pro-life movement, particularly those from MovePro-Life, view this as a significant achievement in their campaign against the organization.

In a recent interview, Shawn Carney, founder and CEO of 40 Days for Life, described the closures as a “big victory” for the pro-life cause. His organization has been actively involved in prayer and support outside these clinics for almost two decades.

“With Baton Rouge and New Orleans shutting down, where abortions can’t even be performed anymore, it really hits home,” Carney noted. “Planned Parenthood has relied financially on abortion services and taxpayer funding, so this is truly a success for the pro-life movement.”

Plans are in motion for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, which manages several clinics in Texas, to close both the Baton Rouge and New Orleans locations by September 30th.

Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast’s President, Melanie Linton, argues that these closures are a result of relentless political pressure. “This decision is not one we wanted to make. It’s been forced upon us by a political environment fixated on control,” she stated. Linton criticized lawmakers for effectively dismantling essential health services.

In a pointed response, Louisiana’s Republican Governor Jeff Landry celebrated the closure, insisting that abortion should not be classified as healthcare. Echoing this sentiment, Attorney General Liz Maril also deemed the news welcome, asserting that Planned Parenthood’s mission revolves around promoting death rather than life.

Though Louisiana facilities are restricted from providing abortion procedures, they have assisted women in accessing out-of-state abortions. Over recent years, GOP-led states, following the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, have faced shifts in abortion regulations.

Carney predicts that more Planned Parenthood clinics across the U.S. will close, possibly leading to further consolidations within the organization. “As these facilities shut down, they’re likely to merge with others they previously competed with,” he suggested, indicating a trend of decline for the organization.

On a national level, various Planned Parenthood facilities are closing, including sites in California and New York. The anticipated shutdowns highlight ongoing tensions as political landscapes evolve.

Linton’s organization faces significant challenges, including a loss of donors and federal funding obstacles, all of which she contends are part of a broader strategy against reproductive health access.

Ultimately, the fate of reproductive health in Louisiana remains a contentious issue, reflecting the ongoing national debate around abortion rights.
