Washington Commanders Make Progress on New Stadium at RFK Site

The Washington Commanders are moving forward with their plans for a new arena at the former RFK Stadium location. This development gained traction on Friday, especially with President Donald Trump urging the team to reconsider its name.

The DC Council recently voted in favor of a bill, with a result of 9-3. However, this legislation requires two approvals before reaching Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has supported the team’s initiative. The second vote is scheduled for September 17.

In April, team owner Josh Harris and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced a deal with the city regarding the RFK Stadium site. They later celebrated the agreement in an Oval Office meeting.

The proposal envisions a substantial redevelopment project costing $3.7 billion, which would include a new stadium, residential units, retail space, and green areas. Excitingly, Washington D.C. plans to host the NFL Draft at the National Mall in 2027.

Harris noted that the Council’s acknowledgment is a pivotal moment for D.C., stating, “Bringing the Commanders back to our spiritual home is crucial. We are closer than ever to rekindling that energy for an upcoming generation.” He emphasized that this project aims not just to provide a top-notch stadium but also to revitalize a vital part of the city, unlocking long-term economic advantages.

RFK Now!, the organization advocating for the stadium project, expressed gratitude for the Council’s decision. Executive Director Malcom Fox remarked, “It seemed impossible to bring the Commanders home just a few years ago. With today’s vote, we are poised to secure the largest private investment in D.C. history, a tremendous win that will create numerous opportunities for years to come.”

Curiously, Trump had previously expressed frustration regarding the team’s name. He indicated that unless the name “Washington Redskins” was reinstated, negotiations for the stadium would be problematic.

Trump voiced his discontent about the current name during an announcement this past Thursday, stating, “Is it a commander or something? Commander, that’s not a good name.” Meanwhile, Harris maintains that the Commanders’ name will stay as it is.
