White House Press Chief Critiques Democrats on Funding Framework
Caroline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, issued a warning to Democrats regarding the government’s funding framework on Friday. This came during her second briefing in a matter of days, where she voiced strong critiques of the Democratic proposals.
“What were Democrats expecting with the ongoing resolution? They’ve included a measure that would revoke tax cuts for working families and essentially end taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants,” she stated. Leavitt went on to explain that the Democratic proposal would require disabled and elderly Americans, along with parents, to cover Medicaid costs for emergency care funding aimed at illegal immigrants.
Leavitt also mentioned that the bill would enable California to persist in its methods of funding Medicaid for illegal programs.
As talks of reopening the government progress, Democrats, who lack control over the legislative body, have made demands that many view as unrealistic. In contrast, Republicans are focused on maintaining current funding levels established by former President Biden, advocating for a straightforward resolution without additional conditions.
The Republican proposal, which passed the House on September 19, was blocked for a third time by Senate Democrats. It outlines funding for the government through November, with Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate Majority Leader John Tune aiming to pass individual spending bills as part of the regular order up until 2026.
With the potential government shutdown looming, the White House faces the challenge of prioritizing essential government services over non-critical ones. Budget Director Russ Vert announced on Friday a $2.1 billion halt to the Chicago Infrastructure Project, following nearly $8 billion in cancellations linked to what he termed the Democrats’ “green energy fraud” funding. Additionally, $18 billion in infrastructure projects in New York City have also been suspended due to the impending funding crisis.
