"Please get the vaccine," Dr. Oz encourages as measles cases increase in the US

Measles Vaccination Urged Amid Rising Outbreaks

A senior US health official is urging Americans to get vaccinated against measles, as outbreaks are on the rise in various states. There’s also growing concern that the country might lose its designation as measles-free. Dr. Mehmet Oz, a prominent cardiothoracic surgeon, reinforced the importance of the measles vaccine during a Sunday address.

“Please, take the vaccine,” Oz emphasized, noting that there is a solution to this ongoing issue.

He stated, “Not all illnesses are equally dangerous and not everyone is equally at risk,” but he strongly advocated for getting vaccinated against measles during an interview with CNN’s State of the Union.

Interestingly, Oz’s boss, health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has been known for questioning the safety and necessity of vaccines over the years.

This call to action comes as South Carolina is grappling with a significant measles outbreak, with hundreds of cases already identified—surpassing the earlier outbreak in Texas. There’s also been a concerning outbreak along the Utah-Arizona border, and several other states have reported cases this year, primarily affecting children.

Health experts are noting that this resurgence in measles cases coincides with rising vaccine skepticism, which might be encouraging the return of an illness that had previously been declared eliminated in the country.

In just January, the US documented 25% of the total measles cases reported for all of last year, and the situation doesn’t appear to be improving, especially as federal authorities largely remain quiet on the vaccination front.

The majority of those affected are unvaccinated, yet no national vaccination campaigns have been initiated, making Oz’s statement one of the first significant responses from federal officials. Previously, Kennedy had referred to measles vaccines as a “personal choice” and suggested unverified treatments for this contagious disease.

Dr. Oz has historically aligned with Kennedy’s initiative to “make America healthy again,” which aims to overhaul the country’s food supply, dismiss vaccine mandates, and question established scientific studies. He has even raised doubts about flu vaccine efficacy in a past conversation, suggesting that, “Every year, there’s a flu vaccine. It doesn’t always work very well,” which reflects the controversy surrounding its effectiveness. Instead, he advised Americans to prioritize their health to better combat illnesses like the flu when encountered.
