Confrontation Between Wisconsin Congress Members

On Wednesday, Congress members Mark Pokan (D-Wisc.) and Derrick Van Olden (R-Wisc.) engaged in a heated exchange on camera. A video from Spectrum News captured the incident.

During a discussion about funding cuts to public broadcasting, Van Olden interrupted Pokan, who was speaking about the issue, by standing up to address a matter concerning Harley Davidson.

Pokan remarked, “Hey Derrick, as classy as ever, man. We love it. Thank you,” as Van Olden paused the interview.

Van Olden responded with a pointed question, asking, “Did you lose your heart? You know, people read things like this,” in reference to comments on a Republican spending package.

“I saw a drunk tweet last night at 1:30 am,” replied Pokan sharply.

This conflict had its roots earlier in the day with a post Van Olden made on social media, where he claimed Wisconsin earns over a billion dollars a year plus Medicaid revenue. He expressed that if the state’s financial support diminishes, it would be due to “incompetence, mismanagement, and maliciousness.”

He then pointed out the need for mental health counseling within the state.

Van Olden’s tweet also referenced a quote from cartoonist Paul Nos, mocking a significant bill on Medicaid cuts, which has been criticized by Democrats who argue these cuts affect millions.

Amid the back-and-forth, tensions were high between the Wisconsin legislators.

Pokan challenged Van Olden directly, saying, “So why don’t you argue with me? Are you afraid of discussing this openly? We can do this right here.” He referred to a so-called “big beautiful bill” that was under scrutiny.

Van Olden shot back, suggesting that Pokan had never had a job outside of politics. “He doesn’t understand,” he added.

Pokan defended himself, asserting his experience as a small business owner for 37 years. He then turned to Rep. Tony Weed (R-Wisc.), questioning the implications of Van Olden’s remarks.

Van Olden interrupted, accusing Pokan of misusing campaign funds, while Pokan responded with skepticism regarding Van Olden’s state of mind, asking, “Okay, look at that. Ah, what a god, are you drinking now, Derrick? That’s the real question.”

This exchange highlighted the deep divisions regarding the proposed reforms stemming from the current expenditure law, particularly around issues affecting social services.
