USMNT Faces Frustrating First Half Against Belgium
The American soccer team didn’t start off as strong as they had hoped in their round of 16 match against Belgium, leaving head coach Mauricio Pochettino visibly upset. Within the first ten minutes, Belgium threw the Americans off their game when Charles de Ketelaere scored, sending a wave of disappointment through the Seattle Stadium crowd.
However, it seemed to shift back a little when Malik Tillman, who had previously netted a late free-kick against Bosnia and Herzegovina, found the back of the net again during a free-kick, managing to slip one past the renowned Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois thanks to a deflection off a defender.
This equalizer came in the 31st minute, but just two minutes later, Pochettino’s frustration returned as the Americans conceded another goal. De Ketelaere again took to the air, outjumping veteran defender Tim Ream to head the ball in.
As Belgium celebrated, Pochettino couldn’t hide his annoyance. He kicked a Powerade bottle on the sidelines, clearly expressing his displeasure with what had unfolded. The first half didn’t go as planned for Team USA, who had significant adjustments to make going into the second half.
Despite the possession stats being relatively even—47% for the U.S. against 53% for Belgium—the latter team was more effective offensively. Belgium concluded the first half with five shots on goal while the Americans managed just one. They created several considerable chances, indicating the score could have been much less favorable for the U.S.
To keep their World Cup dreams alive and advance to the quarterfinals against Spain, the U.S. will have to improve considerably in every area. Achieving this would mark a significant achievement, becoming just the second U.S. team in history to reach the quarterfinals in the current FIFA World Cup format.
Pochettino might have more to say behind closed doors, and with Belgium firmly in control after the first half, it seems he will need to strategize wisely moving forward.
