Poland Sends Jets on Christmas Day After Spotting Russian Reconnaissance Plane over the Baltic Sea

Poland Intercepts Russian Reconnaissance Plane on Christmas Day

On Christmas Day, Polish fighter jets were dispatched to intercept a Russian reconnaissance aircraft that came close to Polish airspace. The Russian plane was safely escorted away from the area.

The Polish military released a statement saying, “This morning, near the high seas of the Baltic Sea, Polish fighter aircraft visually identified and escorted a Russian reconnaissance plane out of its designated zone.” This incident was confirmed on Thursday.

The statement also noted that several unidentified objects had crossed into Polish airspace from Belarus on Christmas Eve.

After a detailed investigation, officials concluded that these were likely balloons being smuggled, which drifted with the wind conditions. Consequently, a portion of northern Poland’s airspace was temporarily closed to civilian flights for safety reasons.

These smuggled balloons, often filled with black market cigarettes, have reportedly caused confusion in Lithuania. While the Belarusian government denies any involvement, many Lithuanians perceive the situation as part of a broader “complex attack” by Russia’s allies, supporting the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Polish Deputy Prime Minister Wladysław Kosiniak-Kamysz mentioned on social media that the Polish military had a “busy” night.

He further stated, “No threats to the security of Poland’s airspace were detected. The situation is under continuous surveillance, and our forces remain on standby to ensure the safety of our airspace.”

As the conflict in Ukraine escalates, Poland and other NATO countries in the eastern bloc remain cautious about potential violations of their airspace. This follows a recent incident on Tuesday when Polish and allied aircraft were deployed in response to significant Russian airstrikes occurring in western Ukraine close to the Polish border.

The Polish military detailed, “Fighter jets were mobilized, and ground-based air defense and radar systems were enhanced. These precautionary measures aim to secure and protect airspace, particularly in regions adjacent to threatened areas.”

In a related incident from September, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland. Estonia labeled this “an unprecedented and brazen intrusion,” lasting roughly 12 minutes, which they considered evidence of Russia’s increasing aggressiveness.

Russia claimed its aircraft was operating over international waters, but Estonia requested consultations with NATO and the UN Security Council. They reported that Russia had violated their airspace three times in 2025, indicating a “broader pattern” testing the resolve of both Europe and NATO.
