Minnesota Police Association Criticizes Rhetoric Against Law Enforcement
The Minnesota Police Peace Officers Association criticized what it called “reckless rhetoric” directed at law enforcement by politicians on Wednesday night. This statement followed an incident earlier in the day in which an ICE officer in Minneapolis fatally shot a woman who reportedly drove her vehicle towards him.
The Department of Homeland Security commented, stating that the woman “turned her car into a weapon.” They further noted that the officer discharged his weapon out of fear for his safety and that of his colleagues, as well as the public.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, responding to the situation, expressed strong disapproval of ICE’s presence in the city, stating, “We don’t want you here” and urging them to “get out of Minneapolis.” He accused them of “causing chaos.”
Governor Tim Walz suggested that standing against ICE could be seen as a “patriotic duty” at this time. Meanwhile, Representative Rashida Tlaib also reacted, asserting that the agency should be removed from neighborhoods and calling for its abolition.
Later that night, the Minnesota Police Peace Officers Association issued a statement, warning that “irresponsible and reckless rhetoric from political leaders attacking law enforcement has real and dangerous consequences for police officers on the street.” They emphasized support for law enforcement amid ongoing tensions.
After the shooting, protests erupted at the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building and other spots. Reports indicated that federal agents used pepper spray and other crowd-control methods to disperse protesters the following morning.
Data from the National Fraternal Order of Police revealed that 347 police officers were shot and killed in the line of duty in 2025, emphasizing the risks faced by law enforcement in these tense times.
