DC Police Chief Pamela Smith Resigns After Two and a Half Years

Washington, D.C.’s Police Chief, Pamela Smith, announced her resignation on Monday, stepping down after two and a half years in office.

Her departure follows significant pressure from President Trump’s administration, which took control of the Metropolitan Police Department earlier this year, bringing in federal law enforcement to assist in the city.

“There comes a time when you know it’s time,” Smith stated, as reported first by Axios.

In her resignation statement, she expressed gratitude for her time in the District, calling her role as Chief of Police “the greatest honor” of her career. Smith thanked Mayor Muriel Bowser for her appointment and acknowledged the support of the DC Council throughout her tenure.

Mayor’s Response

Mayor Bowser also released a statement, highlighting Smith’s ability to navigate an “attack on our city’s autonomy” and commending her leadership as police chief.

However, Smith faced criticism from some D.C. residents who argued that she allowed law enforcement to aid federal agents in immigration enforcement, a claim she refutes. “We’re not cooperating with ICE. We haven’t been since the criminal emergency,” she clarified.

Additionally, she encountered controversy within the police department; many officers accused higher-ups of altering crime classifications to present a more favorable picture of crime rates in the city. As of October, about 30 officers had filed complaints with the Justice Department regarding this issue, leading to an investigation into whether crime statistics were intentionally misrepresented.

Reports of Crime Classification Issues

According to reports, senior officials in the Metropolitan Police Department have allegedly instructed officers for months to downgrade serious crimes. Some precincts in Southeast D.C. reportedly included numerous misclassified incidents. Yet, Smith maintains, “As police chief, I would never tell anyone to change the statistics.”

City leaders and some Democrats are raising alarms over crime data, asserting that violent crime is worsening. The Justice Department, along with the House Oversight Committee, is currently looking into whether internal manipulations have obscured the reality of the situation.

It appears the Justice Department’s investigation is being overseen by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.
