Florida Police Chief Resigns Amid Investigation

It seems we’ve all come across those stories where unexpected events lead people down surprising paths—especially in matters of the heart. A recent case in Lake County, Florida, though, takes an unexpected twist.

The incident allegedly took place last year involving a former police chief who was placed on administrative leave in May and resigned in June. This all ties back to an affair with the wife of a suspect.

Michael Giddens, who was a lieutenant in the Howie-in-the-Hills Police Department at the time, was following a lead related to contractor fraud. Fast forward months later, and he now faces allegations of sleeping with the suspect’s wife.

Following an inquiry by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, it was found that while Giddens did not commit a crime, he had breached police and town policies.

A report indicated that he violated conduct standards related to moral character, inappropriate behavior while on duty, and gender policies. This investigation was announced last Thursday.

Interestingly, it all started with Giddens filing a lawsuit in December 2024 against the contractor for alleged fraud. After initial discussions, the contractor stopped responding.

In March 2025, Giddens reached out to the contractor’s wife, aiming to connect her with her husband. They met for lunch, and soon after started exchanging texts. The nature of their communication shifted, leading to encounters at a hotel where they reportedly had sex on two occasions.

This affair appeared to fizzle out quickly—by late 2025, Giddens and the woman were no longer involved, especially since she moved on to a new partner. Giddens got promoted to police chief in October 2025, which, I suppose, was a surprise considering the allegations that were soon to follow.

Before the controversy surfaced, a complaint was lodged about Giddens’s professional conduct in November 2025. Then, in May 2026, an anonymous complaint prompted the town to initiate a deeper investigation.

In his resignation letter, Giddens emphasized his commitment to high professional standards but expressed a desire to avoid having his personal life distract from the work of the station. I guess that’s a pretty solid stance—no one wants personal issues to overshadow their job.
