NYPD Officer Shot, Returns Fire; Suspect Dead

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch held a press conference where she reported that a 25-year-old officer returned fire after being shot early Monday morning, resulting in the death of the suspect.

According to Tisch, officers were at the location addressing a deadly shooting on the sidewalk and found a shell casing inside a nearby building when a man suddenly opened the apartment door and fired a shotgun at close range, hitting the officer in the left side of his face. “His injuries align with bird shot from a shotgun. After being shot, the officers returned fire, and the gunman then barricaded himself inside the apartment,” she explained.

Later, the perpetrator was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Recovers After Dramatic Incident

Another official mentioned, “We believe the suspect was struck in the face and subsequently killed when the injured officer shot back. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like there was any self-harm.” The injured officer received applause from his colleagues as he left the hospital.

Mayor Eric Adams expressed his support for the officer in a post on X. “I just spoke with Officer Wallis, who bravely responded to this senseless shooting in Brooklyn. It’s great to know he’ll make a full recovery. He and his family are in my thoughts, and all New Yorkers appreciate the service of Officer Wallis and his team,” he wrote.

Community Concerns Raise

Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani also weighed in, wishing the officer a speedy recovery and thanking law enforcement for their rapid response. He indicated that they will continue to keep an eye on the situation as it unfolds.

In a separate message, New York Governor Kathy Hochul conveyed prayers for the injured officer and noted that state resources are ready to assist as needed. “We are monitoring the situation closely and appreciate the quick actions of the NYPD and all first responders,” she said.
