Police in California said a search for a couple who went missing from their home in a nudist neighborhood led them to a neighbor's house where human bones were discovered.
Stephanie Menard, 73, and Daniel Menard, 79 Reported Missing A friend found the unlocked car near the Menard family's home Sunday in an unincorporated area south of Colton in San Bernardino County.
His rifle misfired and would not fire.
Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker said a call led police to the mobile home of Michael Lois Sparks, 62, a neighbor of the Menards.
Sparks allegedly barricaded himself inside the home with weapons, and police conducted a SWAT operation to break up the home on Thursday evening. Police said Sparks was found in a concrete bunker underneath the home and arrested around 9:30 p.m.
Baker said a cadaver dog initially found the body inside the house, and police later found the body in a bag inside the bunker.
“There was extensive damage to the suspect's residence when we entered to conduct our search,” Baker added. “We had to guard the scene throughout the night to ensure we could gain safe access.”
police said Sparks had a rifle and attempted suicide when police found him, but the rifle misfired and did not fire.
The man was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga and charged with murdering the couple, though police have not said what motive the suspect may have.
