Arrest Made After Homeowner Shoots Two Teens
Atlanta police have arrested a man in connection with a tragic incident where a homeowner shot two teenagers on his porch last week.
Authorities identified the suspect as Rakim Bradford, 34, charging him with two counts of aggravated assault and a count related to firearm possession during a felony. According to jail records, he was booked on Friday and released by Sunday.
The police report indicates that officers arrived at a residence on Celeste Lane, South Wales, around 3:40 p.m. Thursday. They discovered a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to his right arm and a 15-year-old shot in his right leg.
Emergency medical services transported the 16-year-old to the hospital in critical condition, where he underwent surgery. Fortunately, he is expected to recover, while the 15-year-old was found conscious and breathing, receiving treatment as well.
According to the arrest warrant, it appears that the teenagers noticed a delivery van in the area and planned to steal a package from the homeowner’s front porch. However, before they could leave with it, Bradford opened the door and fired shots at them.
As Andrew Julian, a neighbor, commented: “You don’t go and steal people’s stuff. On the other hand, what does it mean to protect your home?” He suggested that this incident raises important questions about how to respond when confronted with theft.
Nubian Burns, another neighbor, expressed mixed feelings. She could relate to Bradford’s frustration but added, “But to shoot them? I don’t know. I just think that was too extreme.” She noted that had the shooting resulted in fatalities, Bradford could have faced murder charges over a package that likely wasn’t worth a human life.
Reginald Boudreau found the shooting outrageous, remarking that it’s the police’s job to handle such situations, while Quinn King emphasized that a package can easily be replaced.
