Put another way, newly arrived Venezuelan immigrants make up only 1.5 percent of Chicago’s 2.6 million residents, but they are among the first 3 in 2024 when officers recorded the country of origin of those arrested. They accounted for 11.11% of all arrests during the month.
Chicago City Councilman Raymond Lopez (Democratic), who advocates abolishing the city’s sanctuary policy and stemming the flow of illegal immigration, said: tribune Quality of life laws are not being enforced, and as a result, crime is occurring near migrant shelters.
“Politically, we have an environment where we excuse these low-level crimes as something to be tolerated or ignored, without realizing the serious snowballing effects they have on our neighborhoods. “There is,” Lopez said.

More broadly, 21 Venezuelan immigrants have been arrested for violent felonies in the 19 months since immigrants began arriving in Chicago. That includes the arrest of 28-year-old Elvis Hernandez Pernalete, who was charged in March with sexual assault and robbery. He followed the woman as she got off the subway.
Hours earlier, Hernandez Pernalete allegedly followed another woman and assaulted her in an attempt to rob her, but a passerby noticed what was happening and fled.
Arrests of Venezuelan immigrants have jumped more than 11,000 percent since 2021, according to 2023 Chicago Police Department data.
In 2021, for example, Chicago police arrested only six Venezuelan immigrants. By late November 2023, nearly 700 Venezuelans had been arrested.
