Unexpected Birth on the Side of the Road
A Michigan mother delivered her baby girl on the roadside with help from a young police officer and his brother, who was on dispatch duty during the incident.
It was just before 2 a.m. on Saturday when Maria, the expectant mother, began giving birth while seated in the passenger side of a red pickup truck. Her husband had just been pulled over for speeding.
Officer Al Hasan, responding to the situation, called for assistance, and Corporal Mohamed Hachem quickly joined him at the unexpected scene—a parking lot situated between a restaurant and a phone store. According to local reports, Hachem took charge as Maria exhibited signs of active labor.
In the Detroit suburb of Melvindale, Hachem recognized that immediate medical intervention was necessary, and the birth was imminent, right there in the vehicle.
Excited yet nervous, Hachem reached out to his brother Joe for guidance, receiving encouragement down the line. The moment must have been overwhelming for Hachem; a young officer in his twenties, delivering his first baby with a family member providing instructions.
“You can imagine how that feels,” Interim Police Chief Christopher Egan remarked. “Having his brother’s voice on the line was a source of comfort for him.”
Maria ultimately welcomed a healthy baby girl named Galilea, and Hachem managed the delivery successfully before the ambulance arrived. Paramedics were able to cut the umbilical cord once they reached the scene.
Egan praised the brothers’ teamwork and Maria’s bravery, stating, “She was understandably scared, but they acted perfectly.” Maria expressed gratitude, admitting that she was worried about the situation but felt reassured by the officers.
The entire sequence—from the traffic stop to the birth—unfolded in about five minutes, showcasing how quickly events can change. Hachem, who has military experience, credited his brother for the successful delivery. “It’s about more than just training,” he noted.
Assistant Police Chief Darryl Campbell added that Hachem’s calm demeanor under pressure was impressive, particularly since he was taking instructions from afar.
After the incident, police officers visited Maria and Galilea at the hospital before they both went home, reflecting positively on how the experience shifted Maria’s perspective about law enforcement.
