Heroic Rescue by California Highway Patrol

Recently released body camera footage reveals a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer bravely saving an unconscious driver from a burning car in South Los Angeles. This dramatic incident took place on July 3 and was highlighted in a video released by state officials on Thursday.

The footage shows officers rushing to a car engulfed in flames. Working quickly with his fellow officers, one officer smashed the driver’s side window with his baton and pulled the unresponsive man to safety. Just moments after the rescue, a small explosion could be seen on camera.

The CHP explained to Fox News Digital that officers on routine patrol noticed the crash and immediately ran to assist the occupants of the burning vehicle.

The CHP noted that the driver likely suffered a medical emergency, veering off the highway, crashing into an embankment, and ultimately striking a tree. This collision caused the car to catch fire.

Officer Sal Leon Brito, who was on patrol, reported he spotted the wrecked car and saw that it was already in flames by the time he arrived. He acted without thinking about his own safety.

“My only concern was whether someone was still in the car,” he said.

In the video, you can see Leon-Brito dashing toward the burning vehicle, where flames were shooting up several feet high. He broke multiple windows in an effort to check for passengers. “I used my baton to break the passenger side window, then the back window. But it wasn’t until I broke the driver’s window that I found the man unconscious,” Leon-Brito recounted.

His partner, Officer Manuel Gonzalez, also played a role in the rescue.

After the incident, the driver was taken to a local hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Both Leon-Brito and Gonzalez received recognition for their actions from the Elks Lodge, a fraternal organization. Viewers of the rescue video expressed admiration for the officers’ bravery online.

In a statement, state officials commended the officers for acting quickly and decisively, saying their efforts prevented a potential tragedy. Leon-Brito, modestly, remarked, “It’s nice to be recognized, but I’m just here doing my job.”
