Police recruits in high demand, job data shows

Data shows that qualified candidates looking to start a career as a police officer in the United States are in a good position to land a job.

Carr said the demand for new officers varies by region, with urban areas generally having higher demand because of their larger populations and more complex crime problems.

Recruiters told FOX Business that law enforcement jobs are harder to fill these days, and one of the big factors is the public’s current attitude toward police officers.

“Negative perceptions of law enforcement and increased scrutiny have made it difficult to attract and retain new recruits,” Carr said. “Many candidates are hesitant to pursue a career in law enforcement due to concerns about public trust, the risks involved in the position and the rigors of the job.”

Carr said despite the challenges, law enforcement agencies are working hard to improve relationships and rebuild trust with the community, and are also offering enhanced benefits, higher and more competitive salaries, signing-on bonuses and other incentives to attract qualified candidates.

“The police department is focused on recruiting officers who reflect the diversity of the communities they serve and are skilled in community-oriented policing strategies,” he said.
