Authorities have shared mug shots of two 17-year-olds in connection with the shooting and death of a Capitol Hill intern, which occurred in Washington, D.C. back in June.
The victim, Eric Turpinian-Yachim, a 21-year-old student from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was killed about a mile from the White House on June 30. He was serving as an intern for Representative Ron Estes.
Kelvin Thomas Jr. from Southeast D.C. and Jalen Lucas from Northwest D.C. are shown in the released mug shots. They were arrested on Friday and are facing charges as adults for premeditated first-degree murder while armed. Police are also on the lookout for 18-year-old Nacwan Antonio Lucas from Granby, Massachusetts.
During the shooting, two others—a woman and a 16-year-old boy—were also injured.
In July, a moment of silence was observed in the House in memory of Turpinian-Yachim. Representative Estes described him as “a dedicated, thoughtful and kind man who loved our country.”
Officials have stated that if found guilty, the suspects could face serious consequences. Attorney General Pam Bondy mentioned, “I hope this will provide some measure for his family.”
The relationship between Nacwan Lucas and Jalen Lucas, as well as any prior criminal history for Nacwan, remains unclear.
The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a standard $25,000 reward for information leading to a murder conviction in D.C. For this case, the FBI’s Washington Field Office has added an additional $15,000, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office contributed another $10,000, bringing the total to $50,000 for information about Nacwan Lucas.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have information on Nacwan Lucas to refrain from approaching him and to contact the police at 202-727-9099 or text tips to 50411.
