Pennsylvania Pediatrician Murdered by Husband

A respected pediatrician from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was tragically killed by her husband, according to investigators.

Julia Pederson, who was 41 years old, was murdered in her home. Authorities allege that her husband, Jonathan Gatto, also 41, strangled her before deliberately setting their house on fire.

This incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, October 10. Gatto was arrested four days later and has been charged with murder and arson, among other offenses.

The Harrisburg Bureau of Police confirmed that the victim’s death, while related to the fire, was not caused by it. In a disturbing detail, reports indicate that the couple’s 7-year-old daughter was asleep in an upstairs bedroom during the incident.

Pederson was a board-certified pediatrician, having received her medical degree from Stanford University and completed her undergraduate studies at Harvard. She had recently started working at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Children’s Community Pediatrics in February.

UPMC released a statement expressing deep sadness over Pederson’s passing, noting her dedication to children and families throughout her career. The statement highlighted the significant impact of her loss on colleagues and the communities she served.

Before joining UPMC, she had provided pediatric care across various organizations in Pennsylvania, California, and Chicago. An obituary for Pederson reflected her commitment to children’s health and the trust families placed in her.

Jonathan Gatto is currently being held without bond at the Dauphin County jail, with a scheduled court appearance set for October 28.
