Heroic Rescue in Harlem River

On Tuesday, three officers from the New York City police bravely rescued a teenage girl who was in danger of drowning in the icy waters of the Harlem River. They acted quickly after hearing her shouts for help.

Body camera footage from the NYPD captures the officers questioning the girl about her swimming ability as she battled against the freezing water near 142nd Street around 2 p.m. Another officer jumped into the river, shedding his jacket to reach her—she was about 20 feet away from the shore.

In the video, you can also see one officer make his way along a narrow ledge, assisting his colleague in the water while trying to pull the girl to safety. At one point, the urgency in the situation is apparent when a shouted command urges, “Help her!” The cooperation among the officers was clearly visible as they worked to get her out of the water.

The officers involved in the daring rescue have been identified as Ankit Gupta, Wilmer Guerrero, and Shuaibul Amin from the 32nd Precinct in Uptown Manhattan. Their swift actions and seamless teamwork drew praise from the community.

According to a statement from the NYPD, “Our officers had no hesitation when it came to saving lives.” They emphasized the importance of their quick response in such critical moments.

Reflecting on the event, Officer Gupta expressed gratitude for their collective effort: “I’m glad we all were there as a group. It was a team effort to give her a second chance.” Officer Amin added, “It’s great to be able to save someone. That’s what we applied for this job, right?”

As more details emerge, the impact of their actions continues to resonate within the community.
