Shooting at Austin Bar Leaves Three Dead, Fourteen Injured
A tragic shooting unfolded early Sunday morning at a popular bar in Austin, Texas, resulting in three fatalities and injuries to fourteen others, according to local authorities.
The incident took place just before 2 a.m. at Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden, located on West 6th Street, a bustling area downtown.
Upon arrival, police encountered an armed suspect. In response, three officers opened fire, fatally wounding the individual.
Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Lucritz emphasized the rapid response of emergency services, noting that paramedics and officers were on the scene within roughly a minute of the call at 1:39 a.m.
Local officials, including Mayor Kirk Watson, praised the swift actions of the emergency responders, asserting that their promptness likely saved lives.
According to Lucritz, three individuals are currently listed in critical condition and were transported to nearby hospitals.
This incident highlights ongoing safety issues within Austin’s 6th Street entertainment district, which has seen various violent occurrences in recent years. Police and business owners are actively working to enhance crowd management protocols.
Business owner Hugo Mendez expressed concerns over regular disturbances at the bar, suggesting that the issues stem from a specific establishment rather than the entire area. “Every weekend there’s chaos in front of that bar, right? This is nothing new,” he remarked.
Authorities have set up a hotline through the Victim Services Department for families searching for information about the incident.
As the investigation continues, officials are expected to release more details later on Sunday.
