Police are unsure how a dead baby ended up in the backyard of a Fresno, California, home.
Residents of a South Bakker Avenue home heard their dog barking outside on Tuesday and discovered the baby’s body lying in their yard. report.
“This is not something we want to see, so we’re very keen to bring justice to the baby, whatever that may be,” Fresno Police Sergeant Felipe Uribe said.
Fresno police investigators are still trying to determine the baby’s identity and why he was in the yard. Uribe said the baby does not belong to anyone inside the home where he was found, and the identities and location of his parents are currently unknown.
“We don’t know the cause of the baby’s death. We can’t yet rule it a homicide,” Uribe said.
Police sealed off several blocks around the crime scene Tuesday morning, and Uribe said police “have not tied the baby to any of the homes in the area.”
“[S]”Unfortunately, we don’t know if someone carried the body from one place to another, so we have to look broadly and start looking backwards,” he said.
Local news media spoke to a resident who has lived in the area for about 40 years, who said he has noticed an increase in gang activity recently and that he and his neighbors have installed security cameras.
“We’ve been talking to neighbors and we know that someone in the neighborhood may have seen something or knows someone who knows something,” Uribe said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Fresno Police Department.
