Columbus Police Mistake in Welfare Check

Recently released body camera footage reveals that a Columbus police officer mistakenly arrived at the wrong address during the initial welfare check before the tragic discovery of an Ohio dentist and his wife, both found shot dead in their home.

Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant confirmed on Thursday that the officer, who believed he was responding correctly, ended up at the wrong location. His mistake was only uncovered when colleagues checked the actual residence about 40 minutes later.

“The officer did everything he was supposed to do,” Bryant noted, while expressing regret over the incorrect address on the call.

The victims were identified as Spencer Tepe, a 37-year-old dentist, and his 39-year-old wife, Monique. They were found dead in their Wineland Park residence on December 30. Investigators have already ruled out the possibility of a murder-suicide.

After the initial check, Spencer’s colleagues raised concerns when he missed work, prompting a friend to visit the couple’s home where they were eventually discovered.

The footage shows the officer knocking on the door of the wrong residence, repeatedly asking, “Is anyone home?” Despite his efforts, there was no answer.

The officer then assessed the surrounding areas, including the backyard, before ultimately leaving the scene. It was later confirmed that the officer was indeed at the wrong address.

Concerns over the case have been raised among the public. Bryant acknowledged this, urging patience as investigators work to maintain the integrity of their ongoing inquiry.

“We know people are concerned and we know people have a lot of questions,” she said. “What we are asking for with this investigation is patience.”

Detectives are reviewing substantial evidence, including video surveillance, and have received multiple tips via different channels. Earlier this week, they released grainy footage of a person of interest seen near the Tepe home in the early hours of December 30th. The authorities believe the shooting occurred sometime between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., and they have requested anyone with relevant digital evidence to come forward.

When asked if the person in the video is considered a suspect, Bryant explained that ongoing evidence collection should clarify their involvement over time.

So far, there are no signs of forced entry, and no weapons have been found. As for the couple’s children, thankfully, they were discovered safe at home.

Bryant assured that more updates would follow as investigators continue their detailed examination of the video and other evidence.
