Polis blasts Trump over rhetoric: 'Some say it’s cognitive decline'

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) on Friday night criticized former President Donald Trump over his comments about immigrants and political opponents, questioning whether the former president's comments were a sign of “cognitive decline.”

“We don't know if it's cognitive decline, but whatever it is,” says Polis. said CNN's Caitlan Collins.

“But the more he gets distracted, the more he attacks people like this.” [Georgia Gov. Brian] Kemp and I both think he may have forgotten who he's running against, whether it's Republican or Democrat,” Polis told CNN's “The Source.”

“I think that's great, because I support Kamala Harris. I think she'll be a great president,” he continued. “So let's let him attack other people and take revenge on him. And I don't think that's what the American people want.”

His comments came after President Trump held a rally in Aurora, Colorado, where he argued that the influx of immigrants into the city was a threat to American society and that the city was becoming a “war zone.” It was done. The city came into the spotlight after the former president amplified stories about gang activity in Venezuela involving the group Torren de Aragua.

President Trump told a crowd of supporters on Friday that he wanted to invoke the Alien Enemy Act of 1798, which allows the prosecution of immigrants with gang ties. He said if re-elected in November, the move would be called “Operation Aurora.”

Trump criticized Polis and the city at another campaign event in September.

“Under border czar Harris, Venezuelan gangs have taken over an entire apartment building in Aurora, Colorado,” Trump said at the rally, using the nickname for his Democratic rival that Republicans have given him in recent months.

“The governor of Colorado is scared,” he added, directing his anger at Polis. “He's a liberal governor. He doesn't know what to do. The guy's so scared of them that you probably can't blame him.”

State and local authorities in Aurora have blocked reports that the city is overflowing with immigrants. In an interview with CNN on Friday, Polis touted Aurora as an “incredible city” and claimed crime has decreased by 31 percent.

The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.
