Polis: Socialism is 'a Means to Exploit People More'

Polis Critiques Socialism and Its Misconceptions

During an appearance on CNN’s “Laura Coats Live” on Friday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis described socialism as a means of exploiting people further. He argued that the alignment of government with economic power can prevent the unchecked dominance of the private sector. In his view, actions taken by former President Trump, such as the government purchasing stocks in various companies, resemble socialism.

“I can definitely say that socialism leads to nowhere,” Polis stated. He pointed out that many of Trump’s actions, like buying 15% of Intel and having the Department of Defense invest in MP Materials, exemplify this. “There are two main issues here. First, by positioning the government as both player and referee, we complicate regulation—how can the government ensure competition while also being a participant?” He continued, “Second, as a Democrat, I support universal health insurance. Achieving that necessitates recognizing the prosperity a capitalist economy can create. Indeed, joining the EU mandates a capitalist structure. It’s not about socialism and poverty but capitalism and prosperity; that’s the model we should follow.”

Coats responded by highlighting that many view democratic socialism not as an opposition to money or the economy, but rather as an issue of exploitation that benefits the elite. She noted that public opinion is shifting, with a recent poll indicating that 55% of Democrats support moving toward socialism. “Why do you think some candidates resonate with Democratic voters despite their positions seeming misaligned with traditional views?” she asked.

Polis reiterated his stance, emphasizing that socialism serves as a tool for further exploitation, merging governmental power with market forces and disrupting the balance necessary to manage an uncontrolled private sector. He expressed frustration with both political parties for failing to deliver on fundamental promises like universal healthcare. “I believe we should also strive for universal childcare; in Colorado, we’ve made progress with free universal preschool,” he remarked. Polis concluded that a successful economy is crucial for funding essential priorities that promote prosperity and improve lives, reinforcing his belief that the Democratic Party is historically a capitalist entity, in contrast to Republicans, who he accused of stockpiling corporate shares and gaining undue control over people’s lives.
