In Australia, a political advocacy group named Binary Australia has been fined for what was deemed “defamation” against two transgender men competing in women’s sports. The group was found guilty in August for calling out these athletes, which reportedly led to ridicule and hatred from those against transgender issues.
Kirralie Smith, a spokesperson for Binary Australia, expressed that the fine infringes on free speech and maintained that they plan to appeal. She noted, “It’s unfortunate that the term ‘woman’ now can include men,” and mentioned that speaking out about such matters has led to accusations of “violence” and “defamation.” In her view, “Australians should be worried about their freedoms,” as she believes women’s voices have been marginalized.
Heather Corkhill, a transgender activist with Equality Australia, welcomed the ruling. She stated that such actions by groups like Smith’s can incite hatred and violence against vulnerable groups, insisting that anyone who promotes fear and hatred must be challenged.
As for the size of the fine, it amounts to 95,000 Australian dollars, which is roughly 63,000 USD.
Smith underlined her belief that men should not participate in women’s sports. She stated, “As a registered third-party political campaigner and a woman, I should have the right to advocate for this without repercussions.” She challenged the legal stance that allows men to identify as women, arguing that it contradicts nature. “Nothing can take away my pride in being a woman,” she added.
