Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was found to have lied about illegal immigration under Biden and Trump administrations Written by Politifact.
Pelosi spoke with journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro to argue that fewer illegal aliens were allowed into the country under President Joe Biden than during President-elect Donald Trump's first term, arguing that immigration They were debating whether or not that was a factor in their stunning defeat at .
“It would be wrong to say that illegal immigration, which reached historic highs under the Biden administration, is lower overall than it was during Trump’s first term.”
When García-Navarro retorted, the former speaker tried to twist immigration into the category of a “cultural issue.”
“You have a presidential candidate saying the people coming are murderers, rapists, thieves and everything else. He's made it a cultural issue,” Pelosi said.
“I don't think it was clear enough to say fewer people came in under President Biden than there were under Donald Trump,” she added.
PolitiFact rated this claim False.
“Illegal immigration under the Biden administration has declined significantly over the past four months, reaching levels below those seen in President-elect Donald Trump's final months in office,” the newspaper said. “However, it would be wrong to say that illegal immigration, which reached historic highs under the Biden administration, is lower overall than it was during President Trump’s first term.”
Fact Checker reported that Pelosi's office did not respond to a request for comment, but that an aide to the congresswoman tried to explain to the Washington Post that she was talking about deportation data.
PolitiFact countered that “this data shows the Biden administration has repatriated more people than the Trump administration, but that's not what Pelosi said in the interview.”
The article went on to cite specific statistics showing that illegal entry into the United States has skyrocketed under the Biden administration compared to the Trump administration.
Under the Biden administration, Border Patrol agents encountered migrants attempting to enter the United States 7.2 million times. Under the Trump administration, officials had 1.8 million encounters with immigrants. Encounters do not result in people being brought into the country, and there is no data on how many of those encountered are currently living in the United States. However, the number of people released to await court hearings also does not support Pelosi's statement. Under the Trump administration, the number was about 313,000, compared to 3.6 million under the Biden administration.
PolitiFact concluded, “We rate Ms. Pelosi's statement false.”
