Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump is campaigning on plans to launch the largest deportation drive in U.S. history if he returns to the White House in November.

“Documents provided on demand. Racial profiling. A massive increase in the number and scale of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Yet polls reflect how frustrated American voters are with the failure of both Republicans and Democrats to secure the border. Immigration has once again soared to the top of the ‘most important issues’ list because Washington has demonstrated it is woefully unprepared to implement commonsense immigration enforcement.”

In an interview time Trump told the Daily Mail in April that during his second term he would use the National Guard as part of the process of deporting millions of illegal immigrants from around the country.

“If I think things are getting out of control, I have no problem using the military,” he said. “We have to have security in our country. We have to have law and order in our country. I think the National Guard is going to do the job to get us there either way.”

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden issued an executive order in early June limiting asylum proceedings if daily contact with migrants at ports of entry reached 2,500. The order took effect immediately, as the latest figures were much higher, at about 4,000 a day.

The Biden administration has blamed Republicans for the border crisis. Biden recently argued that Republicans “ruined” bipartisan legislation that would have reformed the system to make immigration enforcement faster and tougher at Trump’s expense, and said he had no choice but to use the executive order.
