A new poll shows that more people think former President Donald Trump won the CNN presidential debate than think President Joe Biden won.
of Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll It also found that Trump’s approval rating jumped 6 percentage points after the head-to-head contest, making him highly likely to win the election.
“Respondents said inflation was their biggest concern, followed by immigration and the economy.”
The results reflect the broader panic among Democrats after Biden’s devastating and humiliating debate, with some Democrats and media outlets openly calling for Biden to step down from the campaign to allow someone else to take on Trump.
Fifty-two percent of poll respondents said Trump won the debate, while just 22% said Biden won the debate, with the remaining 26% saying they didn’t know or weren’t sure who won.
When asked who they would support in the presidential election, 47% said they would support Trump, while only 41% said they would support Biden.
Biden has fallen short on expectations on every issue, but his best policy positions are on abortion, racial equality and job creation. When asked what the most important issue facing the country is, respondents said inflation was their top concern, followed by immigration and the economy.
Both parties were unpopular, with Republican approval ratings falling to 44% and Democrats to 41%.
Democrats have also been hurt by the immigration crisis, with majorities (79%) saying crime committed by illegal immigrants is a big problem and 64% saying Democrats should keep the border open.
In a separate debate poll, the percentage of respondents who said Biden has intellectual or cognitive deficiencies and should not serve as president rose from 65% to 72% after the debate.
While most agree that Biden’s poor debate performance casts a dark shadow over his chances of staying in the presidency, some on the left are trying to blame CNN and its hosts for not fact-checking Trump in real time.
“I’m going to go home tonight, kiss my kids and my wife goodnight, pour myself a hard drink, and have a quiet cry,” said Mike Murphy, an anti-Trump political strategist.
The Harvard-Harris Poll included online responses from more than 2,000 registered voters.
