Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he was “confident” that former President Trump would pick a good running mate.
Pompeo, a Fox News contributor, Participated Fox News’ Sandra Smith discusses President Trump’s long-awaited announcement of his running mate, Biden’s capabilities and national security.
Smith asked Pompeo, a Trump supporter and former senior administration official, whether he was on the former president’s shortlist to be his running mate.
Pompeo avoided the question but said he believed Trump would choose the right person for the job.
“The president will choose someone who is serious about doing the job of president of the United States. I have confidence in that,” he said.
President Trump visited House and Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill on Thursday and said afterward that his running mate would “probably” be with him during the meeting. He said he hasn’t decided who that person will be, but has a “pretty good idea.”
The list of candidates includes leading Republican candidates such as Reps. Byron Donald (R-FL) and Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).
The former president announced this week that he will announce his candidacy at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next month.
Pompeo said “a lot of good people” were standing behind Trump during the meeting in Washington.
He also said he would be concerned if Vice President Kamala Harris, who is seeking a second term alongside the 81-year-old Biden, had to take over as commander in chief.
“Some of them are good candidates to be vice president,” he said of the Republican candidates. “I don’t want to talk about whether they’re in the discussions or not, but let’s just say that I’m confident that the president of the United States, or Donald Trump, who hopes to be president of the United States again, would pick a really good vice president, given that the current vice president is very concerned about being commander in chief.”
“I have every confidence he will,” Pompeo concluded.
